Invest in your pet’s safety

December 20th, 2011

I was recently out and about, enjoying the finer aspects of the Chicago Transit Authority (I was busing it) when I noticed something rather strange about the woman across from my wife and I. This particular individual, dressed in slightly more athletic clothes and under thirty, had a large black backpack on her lap. And inside this backpack were two small black puppies that seemed rather discontented to be in the backpack on the bus, despite the woman’s attempts to calm the puppies down.

While perhaps a strange method of transportation the backpack was vented and I’m sure the dogs made it safely wherever they were going. It was certainly better than keeping a dog in your purse as well. But it got me thinking about airline approved pet carriers. This woman thought she could take dogs in a backpack—at least she was there to watch them and keep them safe. But it was a soft walled backpack and if there was a bump in the road or she fell they could have been crushed and hurt.

In the movies you see cats and dogs (and characters) shipped across the country in wood crates or metal boxes. How many dogs every year, or cats, go through airlines in packaging that is substandard and which does not keep them safe? There is a reason pet carries exist and are approved every year, so how many people disregard the rules and chance their pet’s safety on it? Don’t. Invest in a quality pet carrier and keep your animal, your responsibility and bundle of fur and love, safe.
